Dear Third Grade Families,
It’s hard to believe that autumn officially began this week and it is almost October. The class is doing well as we are moving along through our curriculum.
Faith and patience were the topics of discussion in Bible this week. We learned about the birth of Isaac, the son of Abraham and Sarah. They showed great patience and faith waiting until they were almost 100 years old for a son! We talked about when we pray for something and having faith in God to answer our prayer even if the answer is “no”.
In English, we’re learning about nouns. Be sure to ask your child about proper nouns and common nouns. We’ve also learned about singular, plural and special plural nouns. We will continue this chapter next week.
We began and completed our chapter in science on Animal Classifications. We learned about some of the ways that scientists use to classify the millions of types of animals there are. We began by dividing them into vertebrates and invertebrates. Then, we divided vertebrates into warm-blooded and cold-blooded. We also learned about herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores. Ask your child what the difference between instinct and learned-behavior is. Next week we will begin our next chapter on Minerals, Rocks and Soil.
In math this week we had our first lesson on division. It was very exciting because it involved dividing M&M’s into groups. It was amazing how this got the classes attention. The class is working hard on memorizing their multiplication tables. In our math book we are up to the fours table so I have been assigning the writing out of the 1, 2, 3 and 4’s tables daily as seatwork. This would be great practice at home also. Multiplication really is about memorization, so the more they practice, the better! Our math test will continue to be on Wednesday’s.
The student’s have all chosen their book report books and should have them finished. If they are not finished with their books please make sure they complete them over the weekend. The forms have been handed out. They have each received a rough draft copy and upon completion of that I will give them a final copy to complete. Our format for this report is a “Sandwich Book Report.” The rubric is in their homework folder. They will have some class time to work on these but expect them to spend some time at home working on these reports.
Thanks to the Josh’s family and Liam’s family for the classroom supplies. As always, they are greatly appreciated! We also got some leaves from Cory’s mom to make an exciting fall project with, so thank you!
Please check around your house for any books that have a green label from the third grade library or are stamped on the inside “Belongs to Mrs. Garcia”. Our classroom bookshelf is missing quite a few books and I allow these books to be checked out on the honor system.
Thanks for all that you do as parents, it definitely shows!
May God bless you and keep you in his love,
Mrs. Garcia
